Superhero Games

August 5, 2009 at 6:49 PM (LordoftheReDead's Highlights, LordoftheReDead's Posts)

Alright, I’ve covered a few good movie based games. Now, to hype myself up for the upcoming Batman: Arkham Asylum, I’ll move onto another type of game that is heavily criticised, games based on super heroes. I mean, if super heroes are super, then shouldn’t games about them be super?

Again, I’ll be highlighting some of the better ones out there, so don’t expect there to be any semblance of order.

Spider-Man and Venom in Maximum Carnage & Spider-Man and Venom in Separation Anxiety (SNES/Gen)

Okay, the two best Spider-Man games I’ve played, both follow the same style of gameplay, arcade style, beat ‘em up. And damn are they fun. And have some kickass music too. :D

Oddly enough, as a bit of trivia, Maximum Carnage was released by the hideous LJN. Yup, the rainbow company that only made shitty games. Of course, it was only produced by LJN, not actually made by them.

Maximum Carnage:

Separation Anxiety:

In Maximum Carnage, each level is played by either Spider-Man or Venom, but never both. However in Separation Anxiety, you can have two players, one taking control of Venom, and the other as Spider-Man, and can select who to play as in single player.

The Death and Return of Superman (SNES/Gen)

Probably the only good Superman game. Another beat ‘em up game, which in my opinion works really well for super heroes.

You get to play as 5 different supermen, each with their own different abilities. The game roughly follows the famous comic storyline, The Death of Superman. As you play through, you battle various enemies, and the end of the stage culminates in a boss fight. Pretty standard, but I like beat ‘em ups :) .

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (Arc/SNES)

By far the best game on this list, combines so much kickass with awesome gameplay. Yes, it’s another beat ‘em up, but as I said before, it really works with super heroes. I think one of the best things about the game though, is that you can have four players simultaneously beating the crap out of the enemies. It’s loads of fun.

There is a remake is out for the Xbox live arcade and coming out for PSN, and rumoured to be coming out for WiiWare, but to be honest, it doesn’t really appeal all that much… I’d much rather have the arcade (or at least the SNES) version released on the Wii’s Virtual Console.

Lego Batman: The Video Game (360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP, PC)

Unlike other Travelers Tales lego games, there are actually 6 episodes to play through, 3 as the good guys, and 3 as the bad guys (which is exactly as awesome as it sounds). It uses the same gameplay as Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones, so don’t expect anything groundbreaking. Still good fun though.

And that ends the list. 5 excellent games that are better than the rest of those super hero games. I can only hope that Arkham Asylum ends up awesome as well :) . I hope you enjoyed reading this post.

Movie Based Video Games

July 29, 2009 at 10:03 PM (LordoftheReDead's Highlights, LordoftheReDead's Posts)

Okay, you may cringe at the title, because we all know how bad most movie based video games usually are. But there are a few — and these are rare, mind you — that are actually good games.

So in this post, I’ll highlight some of the good ones.

Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith (GBA)

Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith_01

This game is pretty much an old school beat ‘em up, but with force powers. :)

Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith_02Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith_03

Two characters to choose from, and three difficulties. Both characters play very differently and get different powers. Also, following the movie, the path splits, so each character gets a different set of levels. It’s cool.

The regular levels are beat ‘em up, but every once in a while, you’ll get to a duel level against a primary antagonist.

Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith_06Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith_07

These levels almost play like a fighting game. You get all your powers, you can block the enemy’s attack, and in between strike him, and whittle his health down.

All in all, a very solid game that star wars fans will enjoy.

The Lord of the Rings – Return of the King (GBA)

Lord of the Rings, The - Return of the King_06

This game is pretty much a Diablo clone, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s prequel is good too, but this is better.

Lord of the Rings, The - Return of the King_01Lord of the Rings, The - Return of the King_07

There are six characters in the story mode, as well as an additional two unlockable in a trial map type mode. Each character has a different set of skills and weapons. For example, Gandalf can use a staff and sword, while Frodo is stuck with light weapons like handaxes and daggers.

Lord of the Rings, The - Return of the King_03

The equipment screen. Much like Diablo, there are magical and unique items which are better than regular ones. Also, there are various interchangeable runes that can be put on weapons and shields. These runes are bought, and once bought are unlocked for that save file forever, and can be switched at will. They do varying beneficial things such as healing you while standing still, or increasing damage.

Lord of the Rings, The - Return of the King_04

The status screen. Basically shows all your stats, even ones like dodge and hit rate, when you level up, you get 5 stat points to place in your 5 main stats, which all do varying things. Also shown is gems, the currency of the game, and the amount of kills you have :) .

Lord of the Rings, The - Return of the King_05

Aragorn’s skill screen. As I said before, each character has their own set of skills, though the screen looks roughly the same. On the left are passive skills, which provide constant boosts to various things. On the right are active skills, which have to be used to be effective. These are things like spells and skills.

Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures (DS, PC, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, 360)

Really, all the Traveler’s Tales Lego Games deserve to be here, but I’m just going to pick this one because there’s already a Star Wars game on this list.

If you’ve played the others, you know how it works, it’s basically a 3D platform game with lego people following the storyline of the original 3 movies. Of course, characters all have different abilities, and some can do things and get places that others can’t. In this one, characters can pick up items that other characters leave behind when they die, so you can have Indy with a pistol or a grenade launcher instead of just punching. Boss fights are more varied than Lego Star Wars, instead of just mashing the button, you need to think about it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t fix the minor nuisances of the previous games, and it doesn’t add all that much either.

Goldeneye 007 (N64)

Like you didn’t see this coming.

The best Bond game, based on the movie Goldeneye. It’s a fairly simple FPS, with multiple weapons and missions. The multiplayer is the biggest draw to it though, it really set the standard for multiplayer FPS’, with multiple game modes and maps, it really was a landmark in the genre.

Aladdin (Gen)

One of the best platform games I’ve ever played. It incorporated some excellent ideas, instead of just jumping on enemies heads you used your sword to fight them, or you could toss apples. There are ropes to climb, springboards to bounce off, and a lot of other really great features that make this game excellent.

So there you go, 5 movie based games that are actually good. I hope you enjoyed reading this :)
